The Hippo International English Language Competition, also known as the Hippo “English Without Borders” Competition, is a global competition aimed at promoting the English language, as well as intercultural exchange among young learners. Organized annually, it attracts tens of thousands of participants from over 50 countries worldwide, testing their language skills in reading, listening, and writing. The competition is divided into several categories based on age and English language proficiency, ranging from primary school students to high school levels.
In 2023, for the first time, an essay writing component was introduced, allowing participants to showcase not only their grammar and vocabulary but also their creative writing abilities in English. The introduction of this new format expanded the scope of the competition, offering participants a unique opportunity to develop and express their ideas through writing.
Sofija Zlatareska’s victory in the essay category places her among the top young English writers globally.
